White Lion appears on Earth Day!

April 22, 2008 was a big day at Capron Park Zoo.  Not only did we host our Party for the Planet Earth Day event,but our male White Lion officially went on exhibit.  Crowds  lined up four people deep aroun the fence to see the big cat step into the freshly painted and mulched exhibit.  Mayor Dumas, McDonald's owner Lou Provenzano and the Friends of Capron Park Zoo were just a few of the VIP's on hand for this exciting day.

Now the male spends everyday on exhibit with the girls enjoying the sunshine of early summer.  Many people have come down to see him...maybe even you!

Capron Park Zoo Announces Promotional Partnership!

In August of 2007, Capron Park Zoo entered into a fund-raising partnership with local McDonald's owner Lou Provenzano.  This new and exciting partnership will bring McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Martin Brower, the Sun Chronicle and the zoo together to help raise funds to bring in our new male WHITE LION.

White Lions are the result of a very rare genetic anomaly   known as leucism.  In African oral traditions, white lions were said to be lions from the stars that embody the spiritual good of all beings.  In fact, the name of the park in which the white color form was first seen, Timbavati Reserve, can be loosely translated to  ‘place where the star lions came down from the heavens’.  Although still honored by the native peoples of South Africa, the white color morph is for all intents and purposes, extinct in the wild.  Maintained by a few institutions around the world, the total number of white lions is around 350 individuals.
