Are you a teen age 13 to 17 that loves the zoo?  Are you looking for a way to add to your animal knowledge, enhance your ability to talk to people and make a difference at a fun and exciting place?

Why not consider applying to become a teen volunteer at Capron Park Zoo!

Zoo Crew is a program that is designed to give area teens the opportunity to volunteer at the zoo.  Participants will be providing various zoo departments with additional (volunteer) help, and help make the zoo a more exciting place to visit, while building confidence and being role models to peers and the community.

Application Process:

All applicants must be at least 13 years of age by January 31, 2008.

Extended Application Deadline: March 22, 2008

Applications must include a filled out application form (click here to download application), 100+ word, typed original essay on why you are interested in becoming a Zoo Crew member, two letters of reference from non-related adults (age 18+) who know you well – teachers, guidance counselors, scout leaders, etc.

Once your application has been recieved, if we chose to interview you, you will be notified as to the date and time. Interviews are 15 minutes long.

First Year Crew are eligible to work in the following tracks.  All tracks operate 7 days a week from June 22 through August 31, and each participant will be assigned two days per week. The shift times of each track are noted with each explanation.

  1. Grounds and Operations (G&O) (3) – This track will allow applicants to REALLY learn what it takes to keep a zoo running.  Tasks involve assisting our operations and maintenance department with routine tasks as well as exhibit upkeep, improvement and more. Sunday to Saturday, 8 AM – 12 PM
  2. On-Site Naturalists (ON) (21) – Visitors are the most important part of any zoo or aquarium, and participants in this track will learn what it takes to enhance the visitor experience.  Tasks include manning education stations, educating visitors with non-living biofacts, and discussing conservation challenges. Sunday to Saturday, 11 AM – 3 PM
  3. Zoo Camp Assistant (ZCA) (5) – If you enjoy working with children, this is the track for you.  Participants will learn how to teach about animals and conservation through creative play while helping out with the zoo’s summer camp programs Monday to Thursday, 9 AM – 3 PM, Friday 2 PM – 8 PM

There is a lot of competition for Zoo Crew spots, so do your best on your essay and interview!
